About the Year Ahead spread
The Year Ahead spread gives one card to the theme of the coming year and one to each of the twelve months that follow. The First Month is the month after the reading, so a reading done in October starts with November. It works at New Year, on a birthday, or any time you want a long view.
It is less a forecast than a calendar of things to notice. The theme card sets the tone, and each month card offers a quality, a challenge or an opportunity to watch for. The real value comes from keeping it and turning to each month's card as that month begins.

How to lay it out with your own deck
- Shuffle with the whole coming year in mind. Write down the date and which calendar month will be the First Month: the month after this one.
- Lay the first card at the top, above the second column of the grid below it: The Year's Theme.
- Below it lay three rows of four, each left to right: the First to Fourth Months in the first row, the Fifth to Eighth in the second, the Ninth to Twelfth in the third.
- Read the theme card first, then each month in order, then step back and look for patterns across the rows.

How to read it
- Read each month in the light of The Year's Theme. A hard month card in a bright year may be a short rough patch; a bright month in a heavy year, a welcome break.
- Each row covers about a third of the year. If one row is full of one suit, that stretch of months may lean towards that area of life.
- Major Arcana among the months often mark the turning points of the year. Note which months they fall in.
- Photograph or note the spread, and at the start of each month look again at that month's card. It often makes more sense once the month is under way.
Questions
- Which month does the year ahead spread start with?
- The First Month is the month after you do the reading, not the current one. If you read in October, the First Month is November and the Twelfth Month is the following October. Writing the calendar months beside the cards when you note the reading saves confusion later.
- Is a year ahead tarot reading a prediction?
- It is better read as a set of themes to watch for than a list of events. Tarot describes tendencies, so each month card offers a quality or a question for that month. Returning to it as each month begins is where it becomes useful.
- When is the best time for a year ahead reading?
- New Year and birthdays are the natural moments, but any point when you want a long view works. Because the months count from the month after the reading, you can start it whenever a new chapter begins.
