About the Career Path spread
The Career Path spread is a five-card reading for working life. It starts with where you stand now, sets the strengths you can build on beside what is holding you back, then offers a next step and a sense of where the road is heading. It suits any job, trade or vocation, paid or not.
Use it when work feels stuck, when you are wondering whether to push for more, or when you sense a change coming and want to meet it with a plan. Its strength is balance: it will not let you look only at the obstacle without also naming what you already have going for you.
The positions
- 1Where You Stand. Where are you in your work right now?
- 2Your Strengths. What can you build on?
- 3What Holds You Back. What stands in the way of the next step?
- 4Next Step. What should you do next?
- 5Where It Leads. Where does this path lead?
How to lay it out with your own deck
- Shuffle with your working life in mind, or a specific question about it, such as a promotion or a change of field.
- Lay the first card at the top: Where You Stand.
- Below it, lay Your Strengths on the left and What Holds You Back on the right, leaving a gap between them.
- In that gap, below the first card, lay the Next Step, and below that, at the foot of the column, Where It Leads.

How to read it
- Read Your Strengths and What Holds You Back as a pair. They often belong to the same trait: a love of detail can be your best skill and the reason you never finish.
- The centre column tells the story on its own: where you stand, what to do, where it leads. Read it top to bottom before turning to the two side cards.
- If Where It Leads is a hard card, look at the Next Step again. The outcome follows the current course, and the step is the part you can change.
- Pentacles here often speak about pay and security, Wands about drive and ambition, Cups about whether the work feels meaningful, Swords about conflict, pressure or decisions.
Questions
- Can tarot tell me if I should change careers?
- It can show how your current work sits with you, what you would bring to something new and what might hold you back. The decision stays yours. Many readers find the Next Step card more useful than a yes or no, because it points to something small and concrete.
- What are good career cards in tarot?
- The Three of Pentacles, the Eight of Pentacles, the Six of Wands and The Sun are among the most encouraging for work. A hard card in What Holds You Back is useful too, because naming the obstacle is often the first real step past it.
