About the Situation, Action, Outcome spread
Situation, Action, Outcome is a practical three-card spread for when you want to do something about a question rather than simply understand it. The first card shows the situation honestly, the second suggests the best move, and the third shows where that move is likely to take you if you make it.
It suits work problems, tricky conversations, plans that have stalled and everyday decisions about how to respond. Because the outcome follows from the suggested action, it can also show you what is within your reach, which makes it a steadier and more hopeful spread than a straight look at the future.
The positions
- 1Situation. What is the situation, honestly?
- 2Action. What is the best move?
- 3Outcome. Where does that move lead?
How to lay it out with your own deck
- Think about what you want to change or resolve, and shuffle with that in mind.
- Lay three cards in a row, left to right: Situation, Action, Outcome.
- Turn and read Situation first, then Action, then Outcome, each in its own position.
- Read the row again as one sentence: this is where you are, this is what to do, and this is where it can lead.

How to read it
- Check Situation before anything else. If it describes something different from what you expected, adjust the action to fit the real situation, not the one you imagined.
- The Outcome is tied to the Action. It shows where that particular move tends to lead, not what happens whatever you do.
- If the Outcome looks hard, look again at the Action card. It may suggest a gentler or bolder version of the move than the one you had in mind.
- A Major Arcana card in the Action position often means the step is bigger than it first looks, and worth taking slowly.
Questions
- What is the situation, action, outcome tarot spread?
- A three-card layout read left to right. The first card describes where things stand, the second the action the reading suggests, and the third where that action is likely to lead. It is a practical spread for questions about what to do next.
- Is the outcome card a prediction?
- It shows a likely direction if you take the suggested action, not a fixed event. Tarot describes tendencies, so the outcome card is best read as encouragement or a gentle warning about the path you are considering.
- What if I don't want to take the suggested action?
- Then the reading has still helped, by showing you what the cards see as the strongest move. You can lay one more card to ask what an alternative approach might bring, and compare the two.
