About the Full Moon spread
The Full Moon spread is a four-card reading for the height of the lunar month, when the moon is at its brightest. It looks at what has grown since the new moon, what you can now see that was hidden before, what has helped you along the way, and what is ready to be let go.
It is a reflective spread, more about taking stock than planning ahead. It pairs naturally with the New Moon spread, but works on its own whenever something has come to a head and you want to see it clearly, honour what went well, and put down what you no longer need to carry.
The positions
- 1What Has Grown. What has come to fullness?
- 2What Is Illuminated. What can you see now that you could not before?
- 3What Helped. What has been on your side?
- 4What to Release. What is ready to go?
How to lay it out with your own deck
- Before shuffling, think back over the last two weeks or so, and any intention you set at the new moon.
- Lay four cards face down in a row, left to right: What Has Grown, What Is Illuminated, What Helped, What to Release.
- Turn them in order and read each in its position, then read the row as a review that ends in letting go.

How to read it
- If you did a New Moon reading, set it beside this one. Compare What to Grow then with What Has Grown now.
- What Is Illuminated is often the most personal card. It can show something you were avoiding, or something good you had not noticed.
- What to Release is not always something bad. It can be a finished task, an old plan, or a worry that has done its job.
- A hard card in What Has Grown may mean a difficulty has come to a head, which is often the point at which it can be dealt with.
Questions
- What is a full moon tarot spread for?
- It is for reflection and release. Many readers use the full moon to look at what has come to fullness over the month, what has become clear, and what they are ready to let go of before the next cycle begins.
- Can I do the full moon spread without a new moon reading?
- Yes. It works as a standalone check-in whenever something has come to a head. If you did a new moon reading, though, comparing the two adds a lot, because you can see how your intention has actually unfolded.
