About the The Obstacle spread
The obstacle spread is for those moments when something will not move. Three cards look at the block itself, the reason it is there, and a way past it. Naming the obstacle precisely is often half the work, because a vague sense of being stuck is much harder to act on than a clear problem with a cause.
Use it for a stalled project, a habit you cannot shift, a conversation you keep putting off, or a goal that seems to slide away. It is good at separating the surface problem from its root, which tends to show why earlier attempts did not work. The final card offers one direction to try, not a guarantee.
The positions
- 1The Obstacle. What exactly is in the way?
- 2Why It Is There. What is its root?
- 3The Way Through. How do you get past it?
How to lay it out with your own deck
- Think of the situation where you feel stuck and say it to yourself in one sentence as you shuffle.
- Lay three cards in a row, left to right: The Obstacle, Why It Is There, The Way Through.
- Read the obstacle and its root together first, then turn to The Way Through.

How to read it
- The Obstacle card names what is in the way now; Why It Is There looks underneath it. If they seem to contradict each other, the root is often the more useful one to work on.
- An obstacle card from the Major Arcana can suggest the block is part of a bigger change. A Minor card often points to something more practical and within reach.
- Read The Way Through in the light of the root, not just the surface obstacle. A way through that answers the cause tends to last longer.
- If the obstacle turns out to be a part of you, such as fear or perfectionism, that is good news: it is something you can work with.
Questions
- How do I read an obstacle card in tarot?
- Read it as a description of what is getting in the way, not a sign that things are doomed. Ask what form the obstacle takes in your life: a person, a circumstance, a belief or a habit. Bright cards in this position can mean too much of a good thing.
- What if the way-through card is a hard card?
- A hard card here may suggest the way through involves something uncomfortable, like an ending, an honest conversation or a pause. It can also show what to avoid. Look at what the card would ask you to accept or let go.
