You do not need to memorise 56 separate meanings. Each Minor card is a suit (what area of life) crossed with a number or rank (what stage or role). Learn the four suits and the ten numbers, and most of the Minor Arcana reads itself.
Each suit is traditionally linked to one of the four classical elements. The links below are the ones most English-language decks use; a few traditions swap Wands and Swords.
Wands: fire
Living branches that sprout leaves. Drive, ambition, creativity, desire, the urge to start and grow. In shadow: burnout, impatience, scattered energy. Questions of career and passion projects often bring Wands.
Cups: water
Vessels to hold and pour. Emotion, love, friendship, intuition, imagination. In shadow: moodiness, escapism, emotional overwhelm. Relationship readings fill with Cups.
Swords: air
Blades that cut and clarify. Thought, truth, communication, decisions, and also conflict and anxiety. In shadow: cruelty, overthinking, sleepless worry. Swords have the hardest reputation of the suits because the mind can wound.
Pentacles: earth
Coins marked with a star. Money, work, craft, home, health and the body: whatever is solid and slow. In shadow: greed, stuckness, all work and no rest.
