The Minor Arcana · 8 min read

Ace to Ten: the numbers

Each number is a stage: seed, choice, growth, stability, challenge, and on to completion.

The numbers run like a story in every suit, from a seed to a harvest. Put a number together with a suit and you have a first reading of almost any pip card: a Five of Cups is a challenge in feeling; a Ten of Pentacles is completion in material life.

One to Five

Ace (one): the seed, raw potential, an offer or a beginning. Two: duality, a choice, partnership, balance. Three: first growth, collaboration, something taking shape. Four: stability and structure, sometimes rest, sometimes standing still. Five: disruption, loss or conflict, the test that comes after stability.

Six to Ten

Six: recovery, harmony restored, generosity, moving on. Seven: assessment, a challenge to stand firm or to see through illusion. Eight: movement, effort and mastery, or a pattern to break out of. Nine: nearly there, attainment with its own tension. Ten: completion, the full weight of the suit, both its reward and its burden, and the edge of a new cycle.

Using it

When two or more cards of the same number fall in a reading, that stage is worth noticing: three Fives together, for example, suggest a period of challenge across several parts of life. The reading summary on this site points out repeated numbers for you.
