How to keep a tarot journal (and why it makes you a better reader)

7 min read

A tarot journal turns single readings into a practice. Writing a few lines after each reading, and reading them again later, teaches you more about the cards, and about yourself, than any book.

What to write each time

  • The date, the question and the spread.
  • The cards in each position, upright or reversed.
  • One line per card: what you saw before you read the meaning.
  • The reading in one sentence.
  • How you feel, and one thing you will do or watch for.
  • A date to look back.

Look back

On the date you set, read the entry again and say honestly how it turned out. Did the reading help? Which card was most on point, and which missed? Over months, these look-backs show which spreads and cards speak most clearly to you.

Patterns to watch for

  • Cards that keep returning, especially to the same question.
  • A suit that dominates a season of your life.
  • How your mood shifts across readings and moon phases.
  • Questions you keep asking in different words.

A digital journal

A paper notebook is lovely, but a digital journal can do the counting for you. Here, saved readings keep your notes, moods, tags and look-backs, and the patterns page and weekly digest show recurring cards, suits and moods without any tallying.
