How to ask tarot questions that get useful answers

6 min read

The question shapes the reading more than any card. A clear question focuses the positions; a vague or loaded one leaves the cards nothing to answer. Here is how to ask well.

Ask open questions

"What do I need to know about…", "How can I…", "What is getting in the way of…" invite a reading. "Will…?" invites a verdict the cards are poorly placed to give.

Ask about yourself

Readings work best on what you can see and change. Instead of "Does he love me?", try "What do I need to understand about this relationship?" or "What can I bring to it?".

Keep it to one question

"Should I move and change jobs and end things with Sam?" is three readings. Ask them one at a time, or use a spread built for comparing options.

When yes-or-no is fine

For light, everyday questions a single card read as yes, no or maybe is quick and useful. For anything weighty, ask the open version too.

Questions to avoid

  • Questions about another person's private thoughts or health.
  • Medical, legal or financial decisions: the cards can help you think, but take professional advice.
  • The same question again straight away because you did not like the answer.

Questions

Can I ask the same question twice?

Not straight away. A second draw rarely clarifies; sit with the first reading, write it down, and come back another day if the situation changes.
