Virgo tarot cards

23 Aug – 22 Sep (approximately) · Mutable earth · ruled by Mercury · suit of Pentacles

craft · service · discernment · health · perfectionism

Virgo is mutable earth at summer's end, the season of sorting the harvest. The Hermit is its trump: a lamp held up in the dark, wisdom found by looking closely and alone. Its decans are the Eight, Nine and Ten of Pentacles, a run from patient apprenticeship, to self-made comfort, to the wealth of a family over generations. Mercury rules it, so this is an earth that thinks, measures and improves.

The cards of Virgo

Virgo cards in a reading

Virgo cards favour skill, routine and the body. The Hermit asks for quiet and a careful look; the late Pentacles reward steady work done well. The shadow is the detail that will not let you finish: the eight-hundredth coin polished when the work was good enough.

Reading for a Virgo

Reading for a Virgo, be precise and practical. They will notice vague wording. The Eight of Pentacles often comes up for them as encouragement to keep practising; the Hermit, as permission to step back.

Can I use tarot without knowing astrology?
Yes. The astrology is one layer of meaning built into the cards; every card can be read from its picture and its written meaning alone. The correspondences help when you want another angle, or when several cards of one sign or planet turn up together.

Correspondences follow the Golden Dawn system the Rider–Waite–Smith deck was made within (tropical zodiac, dates approximate; they shift by a day in some years). Other traditions assign some cards differently. See the full table for all 78 cards.
