Sagittarius tarot cards

22 Nov – 21 Dec (approximately) · Mutable fire · ruled by Jupiter · suit of Wands

adventure · meaning · faith · freedom · excess

Sagittarius is mutable fire as autumn turns to winter, the archer aiming beyond the horizon. Temperance is its trump: mixing opposites with patience until something new and better is made. Its decans are the Eight, Nine and Ten of Wands, a run from swift messages, to a weary guard who keeps going, to a load carried too far. Jupiter rules it, so it expands, believes and sometimes overreaches.

The cards of Sagittarius

Sagittarius cards in a reading

Sagittarius cards ask about direction and meaning: travel, study, belief and the big picture. Temperance suggests a middle way; the late Wands warn that enthusiasm taken on without limit becomes a burden.

Reading for a Sagittarius

Reading for a Sagittarius, keep it frank and leave room for adventure. They want meaning, not just outcomes. The Ten of Wands often comes up for them as too many good ideas taken on at once.

A Sagittarius season spread

Sagittarius season (about 22 November to 21 December) favours exploring and reflecting on what you believe. Draw this before a journey of any kind.

  1. 1. Where I am aiming: What is my arrow pointed at?
  2. 2. What I believe: What belief drives me?
  3. 3. What weighs me down: What am I carrying that I could put down?
  4. 4. The middle way: What blend of opposites would help?
  5. 5. The horizon: Where can this lead?

Can I use tarot without knowing astrology?
Yes. The astrology is one layer of meaning built into the cards; every card can be read from its picture and its written meaning alone. The correspondences help when you want another angle, or when several cards of one sign or planet turn up together.

Correspondences follow the Golden Dawn system the Rider–Waite–Smith deck was made within (tropical zodiac, dates approximate; they shift by a day in some years). Other traditions assign some cards differently. See the full table for all 78 cards.
