Pisces tarot cards

19 Feb – 20 Mar (approximately) · Mutable water · ruled by Jupiter (modern: Neptune) · suit of Cups

imagination · compassion · intuition · dreams · escape

Pisces is mutable water at winter's end, the last sign before the wheel begins again. The Moon is its trump: a path between towers at night, where intuition and illusion are hard to tell apart. Its decans are the Eight, Nine and Ten of Cups, a run from walking away from what no longer fulfils, to a wish granted, to joy shared at home. Jupiter rules it traditionally, Neptune in modern astrology, so it dissolves boundaries, for good and ill.

The cards of Pisces

Pisces cards in a reading

Pisces cards ask about dreams, intuition and endings that make room for something truer. The Moon warns that not everything is as it seems and invites trust in what you sense; the late Cups move from leaving, to contentment, to belonging.

Reading for a Pisces

Reading for a Pisces, let imagery and feeling lead. Dreams and the Dream spread suit them. The Eight of Cups often comes up for them as the quiet decision to walk away from something that once mattered.

A Pisces season spread

Pisces season (about 19 February to 20 March) closes the zodiac year. Draw this to listen to intuition and let go before spring.

  1. 1. What my intuition says: What do I sense but cannot prove?
  2. 2. What I walk away from: What am I ready to leave?
  3. 3. The illusion: Where might I be deceiving myself?
  4. 4. What I dream of: What do I long for?
  5. 5. The new cycle: What do I carry into spring?

Questions

What tarot card is Pisces?
In the Golden Dawn system used by the Rider–Waite–Smith deck, Pisces is The Moon. Its three decans are the Eight of Cups (Saturn in Pisces, 19 Feb – 28 Feb), the Nine of Cups (Jupiter in Pisces, 1 Mar – 10 Mar), the Ten of Cups (Mars in Pisces, 11 Mar – 20 Mar).
What court card is Pisces?
In the modern scheme that gives cardinal signs to Queens, fixed signs to Kings and mutable signs to Knights, Pisces (mutable water) is the Knight of Cups. Older Golden Dawn tables split each court card across two signs, so you will see other answers.
What planet rules Pisces?
Jupiter rules Pisces in classical astrology, whose tarot card is Wheel of Fortune. Modern astrologers often add Neptune.
Can I use tarot without knowing astrology?
Yes. The astrology is one layer of meaning built into the cards; every card can be read from its picture and its written meaning alone. The correspondences help when you want another angle, or when several cards of one sign or planet turn up together.

Correspondences follow the Golden Dawn system the Rider–Waite–Smith deck was made within (tropical zodiac, dates approximate; they shift by a day in some years). Other traditions assign some cards differently. See the full table for all 78 cards.
