Gemini tarot cards
21 May – 20 Jun (approximately) · Mutable air · ruled by Mercury · suit of Swords
curiosity · conversation · choice · duality · scattered attention
Gemini is mutable air at the end of spring, quick, talkative and drawn in two directions. The Lovers is its trump, a card about choosing as much as about love. Its decans are the Eight, Nine and Ten of Swords, the hardest stretch of the suit: the mind trapped by its own story, awake at night, then at the end of a thought it cannot take further. Mercury rules it, so its gift is understanding and its trouble is overthinking.

Gemini cards in a reading often mean the matter is being decided in the head. The Lovers asks for a real choice; the late Swords warn that the worst of it may be the story you are telling yourself. Talk it through with someone, then decide.
Reading for a Gemini
Reading for a Gemini, keep it moving and invite questions. They often ask about two options at once; the Two Paths spread suits them. When the Nine of Swords appears, ask what they would say to a friend in the same spot.
A Gemini season spread
Gemini season (about 21 May to 20 June) favours learning, talking and deciding. Draw this when you are weighing two things.
- 1. One voice: What does one side of me want?
- 2. The other voice: What does the other side want?
- 3. What I keep telling myself: Which thought is louder than it should be?
- 4. Who to talk to: Whose view would help?
- 5. The clearer choice: What becomes clear once I choose?
Questions
- What tarot card is Gemini?
- In the Golden Dawn system used by the Rider–Waite–Smith deck, Gemini is The Lovers. Its three decans are the Eight of Swords (Jupiter in Gemini, 21 May – 30 May), the Nine of Swords (Mars in Gemini, 31 May – 9 Jun), the Ten of Swords (Sun in Gemini, 10 Jun – 19 Jun).
- What court card is Gemini?
- In the modern scheme that gives cardinal signs to Queens, fixed signs to Kings and mutable signs to Knights, Gemini (mutable air) is the Knight of Swords. Older Golden Dawn tables split each court card across two signs, so you will see other answers.
- What planet rules Gemini?
- Mercury rules Gemini in classical astrology, whose tarot card is The Magician.
- Can I use tarot without knowing astrology?
- Yes. The astrology is one layer of meaning built into the cards; every card can be read from its picture and its written meaning alone. The correspondences help when you want another angle, or when several cards of one sign or planet turn up together.
Correspondences follow the Golden Dawn system the Rider–Waite–Smith deck was made within (tropical zodiac, dates approximate; they shift by a day in some years). Other traditions assign some cards differently. See the full table for all 78 cards.
